Introduction to Alexander Technique at Holy Rood House

We will explore Alexander’s ideas of Primary Control (the relationship of the head, neck and back)

            Inhibition

Direction

Psycho-physical Unity

The relationship between use (muscle tone) and function.

We will look at the spine, the pelvis, hip, knee and ankle joints, collar bones, shoulders and arms

We will discuss FM Alexander’s life and how his work came about.

We will examine every day activities like standing, walking, sitting,

writing, breathing.

There will be time for some 1:1 work

Hopefully, discussion will be generated and response can then be made to any particular topic which arises.

Pat Brown has been studying the technique since 1986 and qualified from the North of England Teaching Centre for the Alexander Technique in 1994. She is a member of the Society of Teachers of the Alexander Technique (STAT) .

STAT was established in 1958 to maintain professional standards and regulate training. All its members have completed a three year full-time training course, adhere to a published code of ethics and hold            professional indemnity insurance.

Prior to and during her three years training, she spent nine years working in an educational unit for people with profound learning difficulties. She used an approach developed by Dr Geoffrey Waldon, whose philosophy is based on the fact that all meaning comes from movement. She found that this approach complemented Alexander's ideas and the Technique helped her to look after herself and her pupils while she did this exacting but rewarding work.

In 2006, Pat became a member of the STAT council and is particularly interested in promoting regional representation. In the future she hopes to help people who feel isolated start a local group or maybe discuss Alexander ideas in a virtual meeting.
