Tai Chi was developed as a martial art/movement and breathing system that exercised all the joints and major muscle groups while circulating the chi, the internal energy. It is this circulation of the chi that prevents or mitigates disease and debility. Chi or Qi, or ki, is a fundamental concept of traditional Chinese culture. Qi is believed to be part of everything that exists, as in life force or spiritual energy, It is most often translated as energy flow, or literally as air or breath. Tai Chi is performed slowly, evenly, and thoughtfully, with the emphasis on continuity of movement without break or pause. The Chinese use the metaphor of pulling silk from a cocoon: pull steadily, and the strand unravels; pull too fast or too slow, and it breaks. Throughout the form, the body remains soft and relaxed, as if suspended from the top of the head and the joints like a puppet. The mind is centred on each movement, assessing the alignment and correctness of the form, focusing on feeling the flow. Tai Chi is for people of all ages. Master Look recounts the advice he gave to a 74 year old woman suffering from arthritis, she did the exercises routinely and never complained of pain again. She grew stronger and lived to over 90! Master Look can attest to this because the woman was his own mother! He pointed out that doing Tai Chi makes you feel good and when you feel good you dont need to take pills. He believes that you are never too old to start Tai Chi, but you have to do it every day, It is like putting money in the bank the more you invest, the more you can draw out. Master Look likens himself to a good bottle of vintage wine, The older I get, the better I get! The week at Holy Rood will be led by Linda Hill and Lesley Craise. During the week you will learn the Yang short style Tai Chi form. Linda and Lesley spent two years studying Tai Chi with Graham Barrie and currently lead a weekly Tai Chi class in Biggar. |

We are a registered charity wholly supported by donations from guests, visitors, friends, financial partners, local organisations and some grant making trusts.
These donations make your stay here possible as without them we would not be able to continue to run the House. In order for us to be able to offer hospitality to others we ask that you also should make a donation towards the costs of maintaining the House for the future.
A donation is a gift and while we do not make specific charges we suggest that your gift should, as a minimum, reflect the time that you have spent here. We understand that giving these amounts may not always be possible for some people and we would be happy to discuss individual cases.
If you are a tax payer and can sign a Gift Aid form this will greatly enhance the value of your gift at no extra expense to yourself. We can claim back 28p in the pound out of the tax that you have already paid.
